I’m always amazed at just how powerful some childhood memories can be—the sights. The sounds. The tastes. Designer Kathy Donovan shares her connection to a Pittsburgh classic, Isaly’s ice cream, and how she went about designing a rug to honor that memory.
When Kathy was growing up in Pittsburgh, Isaly’s ice cream was a favorite sweet treat for kids — creator of the Klondike Bar and the Skyscraper Ice Cream Cone. Kathy used her childhood memories to create the Cool Bear Punch Needle Pattern, showing just how cool a polar bear can be, chillin’ in his shades, eating some ice cream.
You know what makes this rug pattern even sweeter? By using the punch needle technique, you can save yourself a whole lot of time. Kathy says that once she had this pattern set, it only took her about eight hours to punch. If you made it in traditional rug hooking style, it would take you significantly longer.
